On the first Wednesday of each August, the people of St. John’s flock to the shores of Quidi Vidi Lake in the east end of the city. There, about 50,000 people watch the "oldest continuous sporting event in North America" – The Royal St. John’s Regatta. Along with the races, games of chance skirt the shores of the lake enticing people to "try their luck". The Regatta, as it is commonly known, has been a part of the culture of St. John’s for approximately 170 years. The music "Up the Pond" is played as the boats race for the finish. When an older person hears that music, many wonderful memories of times past are relived again. Today, young people are keeping the tradition alive as more participate in the racing. Each year, the "pond" is a focal point for the city of St. John's.

We want you to learn about this event by "trying your luck" with our trivia quiz.

In order to participate, you will need to choose the correct answer to each question. Each time you answer a question correctly, your boat will move along the course.

Click here to begin the race. Good Luck!

We have designed a math problem based on the current race record. You are invited to solve the problem by determining the average speed of our crew. Once you calculate our race speed in kph, e-mail us with how our speed compares with the speed of a racing event in your city. click here to participate in the Regatta Math Challenge!

Special thanks to John O'Mara, Royal St. John's Regatta Archivist who verified the information provided. Also special thanks to the Royal Newfoundland Regiment Band for providing us with the song "The Banks of Newfoundland" more commonly known as "Up the Pond".
